Social Media Medicine
By Dr. Ally Loveland
The landscape of medicine is ever changing, but the foundation of health can be rooted in the patient-physician relationship. As the newest addition to your friendly neighborhood doctors, I would say that we pride ourselves on face-to-face consultations – where stethoscopes tap rhythms in our ears, nervous coughs fill the silence, and the sanctity of our unique bond is formed. Lately, it seems like this is changing due to the influence of Internet fads, and patients are asking, “Can’t I just get that prescription from an Instagram ad?” It seems the answer may be yes – but should you?
The internet has revolutionized healthcare, improving accessibility to information and empowering patients. But the latest trend – telemedicine startups peddling cures with the fervor of a TikTok dance challenge – should give us all pause. The convenience is alluring, but with every “Double tap for consultation!” I worry we are clickbaiting our way towards the medical Wild West. Don’t get me wrong, online consultations and Telemedicine are a game-changer for rural areas. But when it comes to nuanced diagnoses and complex medical histories, a quick video call feels a bit like looking at the Grand Canyon with a microscope.
The internet is a powerful tool, but it’s not a magic stethoscope. Let’s all embrace its potential while keeping a cautious eye on the hype. Your health is a precious story and deserves a thorough review. So, the next time you’re tempted to click your way to a cure, remember your primary care doctor is just a phone call away, ready to listen, one heartbeat at a time.
