Spring Cleaning for Mental Wellbeing
Erin Massey, LCSW
It’s that time of year again: Spring cleaning! Time to declutter your home and freshen up your space! Though this can be a daunting task, have you ever considered working on “spring cleaning” for yourself mentally? I came across an article recently in which the statement was made that “our internal environment is reflective of our external.” The idea of spring cleaning your mind has the same concept as spring cleaning your home: decluttering the items that are holding you back, exploring your values, and following through with regular self- care. There are different strategies to consider when trying to spring clean for your mental wellbeing. One strategy that can be used is cleaning your home and minimizing belongings to help re- energize your personal space and make room for improving your mood, decreasing stress, and being more creative. Also doing a “social media cleanse” can help you prioritize accounts that are inspirational versus those that cause stress and anxiety.
In regards to bringing more clarity for yourself in recognizing priorities and revisiting personal values, simple exercises such as journaling or writing down all of the things that are on your mind can help increase your own mental space and help you to be more organized. Also following in the category of mental health spring cleaning is to review the things that you have accomplished so far this year, and identifying what needs to be accomplished and how to begin meeting your goals.
Finally, it is important to recognize that a huge part of mental wellbeing is making time for uninterrupted self- care. This may involve exploring your own creativity, learning something new, or creating new habits for yourself that will enrich your life during this spring season. Enjoy the spring season!
