Staying Spry: Some Tips for Healthy Living as We Get Older

Luke LaMueI wrote this article because my parents are getting older, and I needed to find a way to get them to eat some leafy greens. So, here are 4 tips for prioritizing our health as we journey through life.

  1. Physical activity: Staying active has many benefits for our heart, bones, mental health and self-confidence. And thankfully, it is never too late to start; studies show significant improvements in health and quality of life for people who begin an exercise routine at any age. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week to keep your heart healthy and spirits high. So, go take a hike! (Or a walk with your friend).
  2. Balanced nutrition: Nutrition plays a key role in our health. Consuming a variety of nutrient-dense foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains (think oats and brown rice), lean proteins (like fish and legumes), and healthy fats (avocados, nuts and seeds) is important as we get older. Limiting our intake of sodium, added sugars and processed foods also is important.
  3. Staying sharp: Our cognitive health is an important part of our overall health. Challenging your mind with activities like reading, puzzles or playing an instrument can be a fun way to stimulate your mind and keep learning throughout life. Additionally, staying connected with friends and family helps to keep us engaged and connected with others. So, stay curious and keep learning!
  4. Lend a hand: Helping others not only makes the world a better place but also boosts our own happiness and longevity. Whether it’s volunteering at a local school or food bank, or helping a neighbor, altruistic activities give us a sense of purpose and connection.

I hope these tips help you live a healthy, fulfilling life, no matter your age. Live long and prosper!
