We have entered into autumn and the days are getting shorter, even more so as Daylight Savings ends. Unfortunately, it is common for us to get more sedentary the less daylight we have. Now is a great time to resolve to stay physically active regardless of the weather. There are plenty of outdoors activities to enjoy this time of year such as hiking, biking, running, or walking with friends and family. Raking leaves and yardwork may be less enjoyable for some, but can still be good ways to stay active. Do not discount indoor physical activity, either. Yoga, weight lifting, dancing, and even fitness video games can be done regardless of the weather or time of year. These shorter darker days affect us all in different ways. Lower levels of natural light exposure have been linked to disrupted sleep, increased fatigue, and worsening mood. Exercise has been linked to improved sleep, less fatigue, and better mood. A few minutes of fresh air and mindful attempts at increasing our activity levels can be beneficial for everyone.
Clearwater Valley Health offers a couple options to help us stay active. Yoga with Sarah McGrath has returned on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:45 pm and Thursdays 1:30-2:45 pm in person at Orofino Health Center and with a virtual option! Check out the Clearwater Valley Health website for more details. Walk with the Docs is still taking place every Friday morning at 7:30AM at the visitor’s center at Dworshak Dam and is free and open to all (but no pets on the dam, please). Physical activity is a great remedy for these shorter darker days.
