Mindfulness with Pets
By Michelle Sheffer, BHC
Dr Sholar previously discussed the physical benefits of owning pets and the importance of proper care. I would like to elaborate on another benefit of owning animals, mental health!
One of the easiest ways to improve your mental health with your pet is through ‘mindfulness’. Mindfulness refers to the practice of being fully present in the moment. It involves focusing on the here and now, allowing a person to become more aware of their thoughts, emotions, and surroundings without judgment. This encourages greater appreciation for life and can lead to a more peaceful existence.
Interaction with pets can lower cortisol levels, thus reducing stress. When pets require attention, it focuses on the here and now. Also, caring for a pet regularly provides structure that enhances mental clarity. Observing your pet increases our awareness and attentive observation. Seeking comfort from your pet can help with stabilizing moods and emotional regulation. There is a physical activity bonus of walking or playing with your pet that promotes movement and awareness of the body.
Mindful walking; try taking slow, intentional walks while focusing on surroundings and your pet’s movement. This enhances awareness and improves mood. Gentle petting; spending time quietly petting and stroking your pet while focusing on textures can reduce stress and promote bonding. Feeding with intention; instead of dumping feed and going on to the next task, practice offering food slowly and pay attention to the sounds and your pet’s enjoyment to encourage gratitude and enhance connection. Playtime is wonderful for boosting happiness and strengthening bonds! Meditation; sit quietly together and focus on breathing while your pet is relaxing alongside you, promoting calmness and deepening connection.
Petting, playing, and walking are three simple activities that foster connection and enhance feelings of companionship. Therefore, sign up for goat yoga, meditate with chickens, and walk your pony!
