Stroke Smart in the State of Idaho

Idaho has become a Stroke Smart state. A stroke is where a clot develops in the blood supply to the brain compromising blood flow. It is one the leading cause of deaths in Idaho. In 2024, stroke caused 35.3 per 100,000 Idahoans deaths.

When stroke does not result in death, it can cause a lifetime of physical disabilities, which can compromise one’s independence and quality of life. However, stroke patients do better, often with minimal to no long-lasting deficits, when treated within the first hour of symptom onset.

Recognizing this, the state of Idaho is putting renewed efforts into their Stroke Smart State Initiative. The state’s goals are: First, to have every resident understand the signs of stroke. Second, residents should call 911 after recognizing stroke symptoms. Finally, Idaho wants all stroke patients to receive timely coordinated care from symptom onset to improve outcomes.

When it comes to strokes, “Time Is Brain.” Therefore, activating 911 is safer and quicker than having a stroke patient drive themselves to the ER. EMS can provide immediate, stroke-based care and move through traffic easier than private vehicles. Also, they can notify the hospital that they are coming, allowing the ER team to be stroke ready.

Finally, Clearwater Valley Hospital (CVH) in 2024 became a Level III Stroke Center. Which means the providers at CVH work tirelessly to give patients timely evaluation and care, including a clot busting medication called Tenecteplase if indicated. We also work with larger hospitals to transfer patients who qualify for more invasive procedures such as Endovascular Therapy. Finally, we coordinate with Stroke Neurologists as well as our local therapy team including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Behavioral Therapy to help improve quality of life and long-term outcomes of stroke patients.
